Website: http://www.constructiontoys.com/
Description: The Construction Site was opened in Waltham, Massachusetts nine years ago, specializing in blocks and building toys. The products range from basic wooden blocks to popular systems like LEGO and K’NEX. Many unique building toys are imported from Europe and elsewhere. Their primary customers are parents and grandparents, but a significant portion of their business is from grown-up toy enthusiasts. Shortly after opening, they realized the need to have a web-based store to handle the requests they were receiving for their toys, and hence opened their web store at http://www.constructiontoys.com.
In the years that followed, they have expanded their product offerings to wooden trains at The Rail Yard (woodenrailway.com), and toys and gifts with fun designs at Aisle 9 (aisle9.com). This past summer, they added a fourth concept with ZauberZimmer (zauberzimmer.com) which sells puppets, play sets and other toys for pretend play.
All four different URLs for the four concepts link to the same shopping cart.
Technologies used: The site uses ShopSite as the shopping cart system. Specifically, custom templates are used in conjunction with php to customize the look of each store. Each URL accesses its own unique content via a pointed domain setup, as they are essentially sub-accounts all linking to the shopping cart of the primary account. Since each store has a distinct look, there is a different set of templates for each one.
