MAY 2020 NEWSLETTER
An Update on Magento 1 and PCI
A lot has been circulating online as of late with regards to running a Magento 1 store past its End of Life (EOL) date of June 30, 2020 and whether or not an M1 store would still be PCI compliant. Some have gone as far to say that a Magento 1 store cannot accept credit cards after this date.
The bottom line is this: Magento 1 stores can continue to operate past June 2020 without any issues. They can accept credit cards, will still be safe, and can more than likely pass PCI as well. Magento will no longer be providing any updates or patches to Magento 1 (not to be confused with Magento 2 which is still very much actively updated) past June 30, 2020. However, there will still be updates to Magento 1, just not from Magento directly.
We have partnered with mage-one.com, a company that will be providing support and patches for Magento 1 going forward. This would allow an up to date Magento 1 store to keep updated with any future security issues or bugs.
In addition to Mage One, we also offer a Magento scanning service from Sansec.io that looks for vulnerabilities in your Magento store. Specifically, it scans files, the database, and looks for vulnerable 3rd party modules. This is something we recommend all Magento store owners have. We have discounted the service by 50% for our clients ($49/month). Drop us a note if you want to add this to your Magento 1 (or 2) account.
Another option is the open source initiative openmage.org which looks to provide patches and updates to Magento 1 past its EOL date.
Of course you could also look to migrate from Magento 1 to Magento 2 as a more long term strategy for your Magento store. We have many clients that have done this successfully. We can also put you in touch with development agencies that can help with this type of migration.
Hopefully this helps explain where Magento 1 stands with regards to PCI and its ongoing security. We are confident that using a patching service and the scanning service can keep your Magento 1 store safe and secure far into the future.
