PCI Compliance – Protect Your Business

If you are currently accepting credit cards, “PCI Compliance” is a phrase with which you are likely familiar. Unfortunately, it is also a concept that has probably caused significant confusion as this Payment Card Industry (PCI) requirement is often misunderstood and generally not given the attention that it merits. Compliance with the Payment Card Industry (PCI) data security standard is required of all merchants that store, process, or transmit cardholder data. In a nutshell, if you are accepting credit cards, proper certification of PCI Compliance is not optional, but rather a standard that you must meet.

Establishing PCI Compliance insures that you will be able to continue accepting credit cards and also helps to limit your liability in the event of any type of compromise affecting cardholder data. Additionally, many merchant providers assess a monthly fine to merchants that have not submitted their PCI certification documents.

The good news is that you use ShopSite as your ecommerce application. ShopSite 10 has been certified to be PCI-DSS compliant and has passed the Payment Application Best Practices (PABP) security standards requirements. While the regulations are not yet in place, it appears that it may only be a matter of time before using a PCI-DSS certified cart will be required in order to obtain/retain a merchant account and accept credit cards. In this respect, you are a step ahead as your ShopSite software already meets the necessary requirements.

To further facilitate the process toward PCI certification, LexiConn has partnered with McAfee to offer PCI Compliance services in an effort to make it as easy as possible for our clients to meet this requirement. The McAfee PCI Compliance program, a certified PCI scanning vendor service as defined by Visa, involves a mandatory quarterly PCI scan of your website, and provides the tools needed to complete the annual PCI self assessment questionnaire. McAfee then issues a Certificate of Compliance that can be submitted to your merchant account provider to show PCI compliance.

Passing the quarterly PCI scan is the portion of the process with which LexiConn can assist as you would be able to forward any reported vulnerabilities to us, at which point we would work directly with McAfee to get them resolved.

The annual PCI self assessment questionnaire involves examining how you handle cardholder data after the transaction occurs. Successfully achieving PCI compliance is relatively straightforward if you are utilizing a real-time payment gateway with your ShopSite store and opt *not* to store credit card information after the sale. If you do store credit card information in a back end order fulfillment system or in any other manner, the self assessment questionnaire becomes much more complex and compliance is more difficult to achieve.
