    New LexiConn Blog is Live!

We are pleased to announce that our new blog has been launched. The Official LexiConn Blog covers a wide variety of topics that we feel are useful and interesting to our clients, as well as relevant to the industry as a whole. Subjects include ecommerce, web hosting, and web design, with posts ranging from commentary drawn off of our experiences and observations after 13+ years of web hosting, to more technical “how-tos” that may help improve your website. We already have a number of posts, and will continue to post a few times a week.

The new blog does support comments and we welcome comments on any of our posts. Feedback helps us learn and gain insight into the topics we blog about each week, in addition to adding depth to the post for other readers. You may subscribe by email if you wish to receive an email each time a new blog entry is posted. If you prefer using an RSS reader, you may subscribe via RSS as well.

If you have any ideas for our blog, please let us know as we are open to suggestions. But most of all, drop by, become a regular reader, and feel free to comment on any article to help grow the community.

    FTP Compromises

In recent months, we have seen a dramatic increase in the number of hosting accounts that have had their FTP password compromised. The cause of the compromise in these instances has been the presence of malware on the computer that is used to connect to the hosting account via FTP. The virus/malware infects the PC and obtains stored usernames and passwords which are then distributed on hacker networks. Using this access information, hackers are then able to upload malicious code into webpages on the compromised site, thereby spreading the malware and infecting more PC’s.

Specifically, once a username and password is collected, hackers utilize automated bots that login to the compromised account via FTP. These bots download every file that starts with main, index, or default, insert an IFRAME into the file(s), and then re-upload them into the hosting account. Unsuspecting visitors to these modified webpages on the newly compromised site may now have their PC’s become infected, thereby perpetuating the cycle. Additionally, your website could become blacklisted by Google and popular security software such as Norton and McAfee.

Additional details regarding this type of attack can be found in our blog at:

In order to safeguard your account, be sure to pay particular attention to the last section titled “What can be done?”.
