Years ago, the goal for SEO was to get placed well in as many search engines as possible. Generally speaking, the primary goal in this arena currently is to get listed as high as possible in Google, since it is by far the most commonly used of all the engines. The ranking of Google search results are determined by a number of factors. One such factor is known as Google PageRank, which is essentially a link analysis algorithm that assigns a numerical value to each hyperlinked document set in order to determine its importance within the set. In simpler terms, PageRank is a way to determine how important a specific page is compared to other pages, based off of the number and importance of pages linking to it.
Here is Google’s exact description of PageRank:
‘PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page’s value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves “important” weigh more heavily and help to make other pages “important”.’
Thus, every link to a page counts toward this value, and the higher the PageRank is for the incoming link, the higher the PageRank score will be for the page receiving the link. Also note that it is important to vary the text of your links, as search engines track how often identical links appear in an effort to combat link spamming. Varying your link text is essential to obtain high rankings. Google developer Matt Cutts had this to say about identical link text, “Identical link text looks like (and 9 out of 10 times is) a sign of manipulation of our Google PageRank algorithm.”
In last month’s issue, we linked to a beginners guide to SEO. For more information on linking and other advanced SEO topics, the following is a great resource authored by the same panel as the beginner’s guide:
