* From the Blog…Site Speed
Since the beginning of the internet, webmasters have always been looking for ways to improve the speed of their site. Common techniques included compressing/optimizing images as well as restricting overall page file size so that everything would load as fast as possible regardless of a user’s connection speed.Google wants the web to be faster than it already is. In fact, Google has recently added page speed as a ranking factor for indexing sites, though keep in mind that over two hundred factors are considered in determining ranking, so site speed is only a small part of search engine optimization (SEO).
In your Google Webmaster Tools account, you can now see your site speed and how it compares to other websites (under the “Labs” section). Google has suggestions on how to make your pages faster as well. Note that these speed readings are based on the Google Toolbar statistics of visitors to your site, so the data may be heavily skewed if your web browser is the main source of this data, or if your site does not get a lot of diverse traffic.
Looking for an simple way to make your site faster? The easiest way is to enable compression for your site. Your html pages, css, javascript and xml files can be compressed before being downloaded by your visitors. This will make your site faster as less data is being transferred.
Details on enabling compression, as well as other site speed suggestions can be found by clicking the link below.http://www.lexiconn.com/blog/2010/11/google-need-for-speed/
Of course no matter how many improvements you make to your site from a coding standpoint, much of your site’s speed is determined by your hosting provider. Here at LexiConn, we underload all of our machines and cater toward serving fast web pages, which are essential for ecommerce sites. In fact, we even have a speed challenge that will compare how fast a site would load with us compared to another hosting provider.
