Payment Gateways
—–
It is important to evaluate gateway options in order to ensure you are not overpaying on fees. Additionally, upcoming changes may need to be addressed in your account. In last month’s newsletter, we talked specifically about upcoming PayPal changes with respect to TLS 1.2. Since that mailing, PayPal sent out an additional notification with respect to API certificates expiring. The deadline for that change is December 31, 2017. This doesn’t affect everyone who uses PayPal, only merchants using an older protocol certificate. More complete details about this can be found on our blog at:

If you are a new merchant or are not sure if you are paying a competitive rate to your existing gateway, there are a variety of options available. The first thing to do would be to see which gateways your ecommerce solution supports, and then compare the rates/features of each one. The majority of our small business clients use Authorize.net as their gateway. This recent blog post provides a detailed usage comparison:

If you accept Amazon as one of your payment options, it is important to note that Checkout by Amazon will stop working as of April 1, 2017. Amazon replaced this payment option with a product called Amazon Pay (formerly known as Pay with Amazon). If your store is still using Checkout by Amazon, you’ll want to act quickly to ensure that your store is still able to accept Amazon as a payment option. This blog post by ShopSite explains how to tell which Amazon service you are using with their product as well as how to switch over if need be:

It is also important to note that Amazon Pay is a seamless payment option for your mobile users. PayPal Express is also seamless for mobile, so you may wish to consider having one or both of these as options since mobile business keeps growing year over year.
