    Changing Your Domain Name

There may be a variety of reasons why you need to change your domain name. Examples include obtaining a more desirable domain name, using the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) specific to your business location, legal issues mandating that you relinquish your current domain, etc… No matter the reason, the process is generally the same, but should be done very carefully in order to avoid losing rankings in the search engines.

Once you have chosen the new domain name, the next step would be to identify what files would need to be adjusted to work with the new domain name. This is especially important if you are running an ecommerce store and need to have the software reconfigured to work with the new domain name. You’ll also want to check Google to see if the new domain name has any previously indexed content or any history about which you should be aware.

Once you are done planning the domain change, the next step would be to actually implement it. This would involve making sure we have a DNS entry for the new domain name, and having a 301 redirect in place such that everything gets indexed consistently under the new domain. When this is implemented, you’ll want to avoid making any other drastic changes to the site, including platform change, filename changes, design changes, and content changes. Basically, you want this to be a seamless switch as far as the search engines are concerned so that you can maintain all of your previous rankings.

The following diagram provides an excellent checklist of how to implement a domain change, all the way from choosing a domain to monitoring the actual implementation:

Keep in mind that this advice is strictly geared to preserving rankings while the domain is the only item being changed. If you are changing other things related to the website, then the process is more complex.
