LexiConn – December 2008 Newsletter
===========================================In this Month’s Newsletter:
* Password Security
* Dovecot Mailserver
* Happy Holidays from LexiConn!
* Featured Client: logosportswear.comPassword Security
Is your password too easy to guess?Over the past few months, spammers and hackers have been focusing on an
easier way to compromise and break into accounts on servers. Specifically,
they use common usernames and easy to guess passwords to try to access
POP/IMAP email boxes. Once they guess one correctly, they pass this access
information out to other spammers/hackers so the account can be used to
send spam, and phishing emails. Of course, now the spammer/hacker can also
read the emails in the compromised email box in the hopes of finding
potentially sensitive information.To combat this, LexiConn has an intrusion detection system (IDS) /
firewall that blocks an IP after only a handful of wrongly entered
usernames/passwords. Where this protection breaks down is when someone who
has a POP box username of “joe” for example chooses a password like
“joe123″. All it takes is a spammer to try this combination and they would
then be able to login and use the account for spamming.In order to tighten security, we have implemented a stricter password
system in the Account Manager that does not allow these easy to guess
passwords to be put in place. Additionally, if your current password is
easy to guess, or has the username included in the password itself, we ask
that you reset your password for your own protection. This can be done in
the Account Manager at:http://www.lexiconn.com/clients/login.html

Dovecot Mailserver
Dovecot has replaced uw imap as the IMAP/POP3 server on our network.
Dovecot is an IMAP/POP3 server for Linux, written primarily with security
in mind. It offers faster IMAP/POP3 access, uses indexes to reduce disk
load, allows concurrent IMAP/POP3 logins, and offers enhanced SSL security
for IMAPS/POP3S SSL access.This upgrade was made several weeks ago, and was completely transparent.
Nothing different needs to be done by end users who check mail on our
network.If you are interested in reading more about Dovecot, reference:
