LexiConn: Behind the Scenes, part 1 – DNS Redundancy

This is the first in a four part series where we will highlight a few of the improvements we have been implementing “behind the scenes” to continually improve our network and services. Much of this work often goes un-noticed, but it is important to insure we remain a leader in the web hosting industry…

    DNS nameserver redundancy improved:
LexiConn has improved the DNS nameserver redundancy offered by our three nameservers. Nameservers are the backbone for the internet, providing domain name resolution to IP numbers, which networks use to route information. Without properly functioning nameservers, computers would not know where to send a request when someone types in a website address like http://www.lexiconn.com. Having geographically separate nameservers provides redundancy and increased reliability with respect to DNS lookups.

LexiConn’s second nameserver, ns2.serverhost.net, has been moved from datacenter DC1 (where our first nameserver currently resides) to DC2. This now means that our three nameservers are each in separate datacenters, increasing DNS redundancy and allowing for two nameservers to be impacted at the same time and still providing 100% DNS resolution. A networking issue in any one datacenter will now not impact DNS resolution.

In order to take advantage of this redundancy, domains should have all three of our nameservers (NS.SERVERHOST.NET, NS2.SERVERHOST.NET, NS3.SERVERHOST.NET) listed with the registrar. If you’re not sure if your domain has all three of our nameservers, you can perform a WHOIS lookup on our domains site:

Network Status Page / Support Center

In the event of a network issue or a problem with any individual server, up to date information will be detailed on our Network Status page. You can reach this page by going to our website and clicking on ‘Network Status’ under the ‘Support’ option in our top navigation menu.

If a network wide issue is preventing you from reaching the Network Status page on our website, we also maintain a Network Status page outside of the datacenter in order to maintain our ability to keep you informed. As such, you will want to be sure to bookmark the offsite Network Status page web address listed below for future reference.

    http://www.lexiconnstatus.com/

To reiterate, this is an offsite emergency status page and would still be accessible even if you could not reach the main LexiConn website. It will always have up to date information regarding any network and/or server issues.

If you do not see any issues reported, and are having trouble accessing your site, feel free to contact us, or review our knowledgebase article detailing things you can do to determine what is causing your problem:

For those of you that have not already registered, you can access and register with our web-based Support Center at:

    http://support.lexiconn.com/

The Helpdesk linked on this page is the most efficient support method and will provide the quickest response. Additionally, it allows you the ability to track your open support tickets as well as reference older, resolved issues.
