SSL for Email

Last month’s newsletter focused on SSL certificate options for use with your website. This month, we will focus on a client issue that we see regularly, namely whether or not to use SSL when configuring a device to check and send email.

SSL is essential if you utilize public, wifi hotspots. These include hotels, airports, restaurants, etc. On these wireless networks, anyone has access and could potentially be intercepting the unencrypted data that is transmitted, including login credentials and other sensitive information. Enabling SSL encrypts the password when it is transmitted making it of no value should a “sniffer” exist on the network.

In order to configure your device to use SSL, you would need to set both the incoming and the outgoing server names to the secure server name of the machine your account is located on. This value can be obtained on the main details screen of the Account Manager under the ‘SSL Email Server Name’ field:

However, for most clients, SSL isn’t needed or required when configuring an email program. Specifically, users who are connecting from their house/business on a local network setup would be fine without SSL, as it would be unlikely for that type of set up to be compromised. SSL can be more difficult to configure depending on the email program, which is why we do not recommend it by default unless you are utilizing public wireless networks.
