Here are a few things we’ve been working on behind the scenes this year…Network Infrastructure Improvements
—All of our servers are now located on both a Gigabit (1,000 Mbps) public network and a Gigabit private network. The Gigabit ports and network allow for the fastest speeds possible, while providing ample room for growth and traffic spikes without any interruptions.
Our private network allows us to move data and files securely and quickly, which aids in migrations, backups, and allows us to expand our service offerings in the future.
Hardware Improvements
—All of our shared servers are now running on a minimum of dual processor servers with a minimum of 16 CPU cores. This gives us plenty of capacity in terms of CPU horsepower.
We’ve standardized all shared servers to utilize hardware RAID-10 drive setups, which consist of an enterprise level hardware RAID controller, and a minimum of four 15,000 rpm SAS drives in a RAID-10 configuration. Translation: Your data is stored on a very reliable and fast system that can allow for at least one drive to fail without causing any data loss or unplanned downtime.
Each shared server has a minimum of 12 GB of RAM, which allows for traffic spikes without exhausting the memory in each server.
Backup Improvements
—Every server is backed up to a separate backup drive each night, and 5 days worth of backups are retained. Additionally, a separate backup server consisting of six 2 TB drives (6 TB capacity) is used to perform a backup of each server every 6 hours. This backup system uses an enterprise backup solution that allows us to bare metal restore a server at a rate of 200 GB an hour. This would be used if a RAID array was corrupt or all data was lost on a server.
To round things out, our disaster recovery plan includes a daily backup of all shared servers to an alternate datacenter with a separate provider in a geographically separate location. This is used in the event of a major disaster at the datacenter itself.
—Hopefully this sheds some light on what we do in the background to continue to improve our services and offerings.
