    Basic Account -
Previous allocation: 500 MB space, 15 GB monthly transfer
New specifications: 600 MB space, 20 GB monthly transfer

Optimize Your Site for Your Target Audience…

When building or updating your website, you want to be certain that your site is optimized for your target audience. Specifically, you should make sure that your site does not contain any coding errors that could prevent it from being displayed properly across different browsers or platforms. You may wish to use an html validator on your site to help detect these errors. A couple of excellent free ones can be found at:

    http://validator.w3.org/
    http://www.htmlhelp.com/tools/validator/

You likely will not receive an error free report, but one that does not have any major errors should be your goal. As far as which browsers people are using these days, global internet statistics reports vary widely. Depending on the source, Internet Explorer accounts for 55-90% of users, Firefox 8-30%, Safari 2-6%, etc. In order to determine which browsers your users employ, you may wish to utilize urchin reports, which can tell you this information as well as much more. An example can be found by clicking on the demo report at:

http://69.94.67.101:9999/ (go to Browsers & Robots -> Browsers)

Another important item to consider when designing your site is the screen resolution of your audience. Most people have a resolution of 1024 by 768 pixels, but you should always make sure that your site displays properly in other sizes as well, such as 1280 by 1024 and 800 by 600. In order to view your site in a different resolution, go to your computer’s control panel and click on Display -> Settings, and adjust the resolution accordingly. If you are interested in knowing how many of your visitors are using the various screen resolutions, you can track this through urchin’s UTM feature, and the data would be available under Client Parameters -> Screen Resolution.

In addition to browser and screen resolution compatibility, one other thing to consider when designing your site is how it will look across platforms. While the vast majority of computers are Windows based, it is important to make sure that your site displays properly on a Macintosh/Apple as well, since they now have more than a 4% market share. Once again, urchin can let you know which platform your users have by going to Browsers & Robots -> Platforms. If you are interested in adding urchin to your account, please fill out the following form:
