More tools to combat spam…A new feature has been added to the spam protection system that helps to determine what is a spam or junk email. This feature, a new Realtime Blackhole List (RBL) named SURBL, analyzes the content of each email to see if any of the domains or URL’s listed in the email are known spammer websites. If they are, the email is more likely to be spam, and is weighted more towards spam for the final determination by the software.
This new RBL is revolutionary in the fight against spam, as it does not care where the email originates from (as most spammers forge the From: field and use hijacked servers and computers to send out their junk mail), but rather sees what URL’s and domains the email is trying to get people to go to or show images from in the body of the message. This is very effective, as spammers must use a website to display their images or for people to go to in order to purchase an item. The new RBL catches these websites, and can greatly help classify an email as spam.
The new feature is already in the software, so no changes are needed in your spam settings. As long as you have the setting turned on for checking the Realtime Black Lists, then this new option will be automatically used for each incoming email.

Authorize.net Fraud Detection Suite…If you currently have an Authorize.net payment gateway account for the realtime handling of credit cards on your site, there is a new tool available to help combat and stop fraudulent charges. The Fraud Detection Suite (FDS) uses many filters and techniques to help determine what charges are actually fraudulent. Some of the filters it utilizes are:
- Suspicious Transaction Filter
- Shipping-Billing Mismatch Filter
- Transaction IP Velocity Filter
- IP Address BlockingPricing for this feature starts as low as $12.50 per month, and can be automatically added to your Authorize.net account in the control panel. It is a great feature for anyone handling realtime credit card charges that has to deal with fraud on a daily basis. If you are interested in obtaining an Authorize.net account, you may find more information about this on our website at:

Tip: Disable the CATCH_ALL for less junk emailAs spammers get more and more aggressive, the amount of junk email continues to rise exponentially. Recent reports state that 70-80% of all email traffic is now spam or unsolicited junk email. With this large amount of junk being sent to email boxes, one thing you can do to help cut down on this is to disable the use of the CATCH_ALL feature in your email settings. Spammers often send email to random addresses to domain names, and with the CATCH_ALL enabled, you end up getting multiple copies of the same email.
Before you change the setting for the CATCH_ALL in the Account Manager under Email Options, you will want to make sure that all of the email addresses that you do use are listed in the Email Aliases section. Once you have defined all of the email aliases/addresses that are in use for your domain, you can edit the CATCH_ALL email alias and set it to BOUNCE, which will send back a “User Unknown” response for anyone that sends an email to an address that you do not have explicitly defined.
If you have any questions about this, please let us know.
