Swish-E is a quick and comprehensive search engine that creates an index of all the words in your website and makes your web pages searchable, ranking results based on the number of times a word appears, whether it is in the title of a webpage, etc...

Swish-E can be customized to display:

1. A custom header and footer

2. A custom title on the search results page

3. A custom meta description tag (100 character limit)

4. Custom text on the search page (limited to the first 100 words on the web page)

5. No meta description tag or page text at all

This script can be installed from the "Account Manger". Once installed, all that you will need to do is re-index your website after making significant changes to your web pages. Re-indexing is as easy as running a CGI script from the web, and can be set to run automatically each week.

Instructions for installing Swish-E:

Log in to the account manager, click the "Applications" button on the left hand menu, then click the "Search" link, then click "Swish Search". There are seven options to configure, instructions on what to enter are as follows:

Swish Configuration image

1. Your Domain Name:

Simply enter your domain name

2. File Types to be indexed:

In most cases, you can just leave this how it is.

3. Do you want the results of the search to show the date a file was last modified on?

If you select yes, you will see a line at the bottom of each search result that looks something like this:

If you select no, the search results will simply not display the date in which the file was last modified.

Note that if a file has never been modified, the creation date will be displayed.

4. Do you want users to be able to sort results by date of files last modified?

If you select yes, there will be an option on the search results page for users to sort the results by the date last modified. That is, the pages with the most recent created/modified dates will appear at the time. If you select no, this option will not be available.

5. Do you want to include in the results the first 100 characters of the body of the html page, the first 100 characters of the META tag "description", or nothing at all? (Note: Including a description can result in a large index file.)

For most people, simply displaying the title of the web page is enough. If you need to provide search results to your visitors that are more comprehensive, selecting "Body of Page" will show the first 100 characters of the web page in the search results. Selecting "Meta tag" will show the first 100 characters of the meta description for that page.

6. Do you want your website indexed automatically once a week?

The default is no, this is only necessary if you have a large site and update it regularly.

7. Number of results per page.

This specifies how many results are allowed on one single page before the generating a "Next" link to direct visitors to the next results page when the search results come up.

Once you are finished setting these options up, click "Submit" and you will be brought to another page. From there you'll probably want to click where it says "Click here to Index Your Site" since you just installed it.

From here, you have two options for making the search available live on your web site:

Option 1 -- Create a link to http://www.your_domain.com/swish.cgi

Option 2 -- Add this code anywhere on any page (or to a page template) to create a small search box:

<form method="post" action="/swish.cgi" enctype="application/x-www-form-urlencoded" class="form">
<input / maxlength="200" value="" size="20" type="text" name="query">
<input / value="Search!" type="submit" name="submit">
</form>
